Résumé : Cet article de
synthèse est la version écrite d'une conférence
invitée donnée à Szeged en août 1987. La
conjecture de Rhodes, appelée par Rhodes "conjecture du type II",
est extraite d'un article de Rhodes et Tilson publié en 1972, bien
que la conjecture n'y apparaisse pas explicitement. La conjecture de Rhodes
donne un algorithme effectif pour calculer le noyau d'un semigroupe fini.
C'est un problème important en théorie des semigroupes, mais
il est resté confiné à quelques spécialistes
jusqu'à la conférence de Chico en avril 1976, où un
résultat brilliant de Ash a donné un nouveau souffle à
cette conjecture. Le but de cet article est de souligner l'importance de ce
problème, d'énoncer les résultats partiels connus
à ce jour et de discuter les diverses approches utilisées
pour tenter de résoudre la conjecture de Rhodes.
Abstract : This survey article is the written version of an invited
lecture given at the Conference on Semigroups held in Szeged in August
1987. The Conjecture of Rhodes, originally called "Type II Conjecture" by
Rhodes, emerged from a paper of Rhodes and Tilson published in 1972,
although the conjecture did not appear explicitely in this paper. Rhodes
conjecture gives an effective algorithm to compute the kernel of a finite
semigroup. This is an important problem in finite semigroup theory, but it
remained confined to a rather small audience until the conference held in
Chico in April 1976, where a brilliant result of Ash gave a new impetus to
the conjecture. The aim of this survey is to emphasize the importance of
this problem, to state the partial results known so far, and to discuss
various attempts to solve the Rhodes conjecture.
